The basics of using TurnItIn.com

Instructions

Signing up for the first time

  1. Go to Create a User Profile at Turnitin.com
  2. Select "Student"
  3. Enter your class ID and enrollment password. These should be provided to you by your instructor.
  4. Enter your name, email address and choose a password for your account.
  5. Agree to the terms and click "create profile"

Joining a class if you already have a Turnitin account

  1. Go to Turnitin.com, login, and click the "Enroll in a Class" tab.
  2. Enter your class ID and enrollment password provided by your instructor.

Submitting an assignment

  1. Login to Turnitin.com with your full email and password you created when you setup your profile
  2. Click on the class name to view a list of assignments
  3. Click the blue Submit button next to the assignment you are turning in
  4. Add a title for your work and browse for the file you want to submit.
  5. Click Upload
  6. You now will be shown a preview of the text of your document. If everything is OK, click Submit
  7. After a several seconds, you should see confirmation that your upload was successful

Viewing the originality report

Note: The originality report is not available immediately after you submit your file in Turnitin. It can take from minutes to several hours to be processed by the system and your instructor might also have settings in place that control when you may view the report.

  1. Login to Turnitin.com
  2. Click on the class name to view all assignments and then select the assignment you want the report for
  3. If an originality report is available you will see a percentage in the "Similarity" column showing how much of the document was found to be similar to content in the Turnitin database. Click on the blue View button to open the Document Viewer
  4. Click on the Originality button in the top left corner of the viewer to see the originality report for your document
