A Guide to Assist Chemistry Students with Research

Chemistry Data Sources

  • ChemSpider
"ChemSpider is a free chemical structure database providing fast text and structure search access to over 50 million structures from hundreds of data sources."
  • ChemSynthesis
"ChemSynthesis is a freely accessible database of chemicals. This website contains substances with their synthesis references and physical properties such as melting point, boiling point and density. There are currently more than 40,000 compounds and more than 45,000 synthesis references in the database."
  • Data.gov
The home of the U.S. Government's open data sources. Here you will find data, tools, and resources to conduct research, develop web and mobile applications, design data visualizations, and more. Includes data on Agriculture, climate, ecosystems, and more.
  • Data.gov Chemistry Data Sets
Data sets compiled and made available to the public having to do with chemistry.
  • eCrystals
"eCrystals - Southampton is the archive for Crystal Structures generated by the Southampton Chemical Crystallography Group and the EPSRC UK National Crystallography Service."
  • European Union Open Data Portal
The European Union Open Data Portal is the single point of access to a growing range of data from the institutions and other bodies of the European Union (EU). Data are free for you to use and reuse for commercial or non-commercial purposes.

By providing easy and free access to data, the portal aims to promote their innovative use and unleash their economic potential. It also aims to help foster the transparency and the accountability of the institutions and other bodies of the EU.

The EU Open Data Portal is managed by the Publications Office of the European Union. Implementation of the EU's open data policy is the responsibility of the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology of the European Commission.
  • National Centers for Environmental Information
A collection of NOAA Data Sources and the codebooks to help interpret the data contained therein. Includes datasets on climatology,
    water temperature, oceans, and more.
  • National Data Service
The National Data Service (NDS) is an emerging vision for how scientists and researchers across all disciplines can find, reuse, and publish data. It builds on the data archiving and sharing efforts already underway within specific communities and links them together with a common set of tools designed around the following capabilities:

    Search
The NDS will allow users to easily search for data across disciplinary boundaries. As users hone in on data of interest, they can easily switch to discipline-specific tools.

    Publish
The NDS will connect users to tools for building and sharing collections of data. It will help users find and deliver data to the best repository for data-publishing.

    Link
The NDS will create robust connections between data and published articles. When researchers reference an article, they have ready access to the underlying data.

    Reuse
The NDS will not only provide access to data for download, it will provide tools for transferring data to processing platforms or allow analysis to be attached to the data.
  • nmrshiftdb2
"nmrshiftdb2 is a NMR database (web database) for organic structures and their nuclear magnetic resonance (nmr) spectra. It allows for spectrum prediction (13C, 1H and other nuclei) as well as for searching spectra, structures and other properties. Last not least, it features peer-reviewed submission of datasets by its users. The nmrshiftdb2 software is open source, the data is published under an open content license. Please consult the documentation for more detailed information. nmrshiftdb2 is the continuation of the NMRShiftDB project with additional data and bugfixes and changes in the software."
  • OECD iLibrary
Data sets gathered and made available by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Topics include Energy, CO2 emissions, environmental, agricultural, and health topics.
  • PubChem
From the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
  • USDA Data and Statistics
Data sources compiled and maintained by the United States Department of Agriculture regarding a number of agricultural topics both domestic and foreign.
  • World Bank Data Catalog, The
A collection of open data gathered by The World Bank. While primarily economic in nature, the data touches on topics such as agriculture, energy, health and science as well.
  • WorldWideMolecularMatrix
A repository of information on published molecules.
  • ZINC15
Welcome to ZINC, a free database of commercially-available compounds for virtual screening. ZINC contains over 100 million purchasable compounds in ready-to-dock, 3D formats.
